  1. Hi Stucko,

Welcome to the exciting but dangerous world of indie games development :) The best place for you to find other game developer to work with is either TIGSource – http://www.tigsource.com or IndieGamer – http://www.indiegamer.com. You can learn a lot from collective wisdom which can be found at the website/forum.

I encourage you to participate in the forum community and getting to know the community at there. At TIGSource forum, there is a subforum called Project. Maybe you can tell about the game project you are working on and ask for some help from the community out there.

Yes, I am a C/C++ programmer and I build the game engine in Blade Thrust Tactics all by myself. It’s actually not that hard because it’s just a 2D game and I build the game engine based on codes I use from a game programming book called Isometric Game Programming with DirectX 7.0. This is in my opinion the best book in teaching how to build isometric game from scratch.

But nowadays you don’t have to build your own version of game engine anymore because there’s plenty of game engine you can use yourself. The choice depends on what kind of game you are going to develop. For 2D game, there’s Game Maker. For 3D game, there’s Unity. Both of them are free but can be upgraded to pro version for a price.

Design document is a must for any game project so you should create it at the early part of your development. Spell out as many details as possible to the point that you can imagine how the game flow inside your head. This is important because during the game development, you’ll face plenty of unknown decision that you need to make so having a detailed design document can really help you in the process.

My experience in online games is very limited so I don’t play with any MMORPG although my favourite genre is RPG.

If you need to ask some question or you get stuck somewhere during your development, feel free to ask me through GTalk. I’m always happy to help fellow game developer realizing their true potential.

  2. Hi Edy,

I am new in games development and Ive been reading your blog for a while now but have to admit I havent played any of ur games (will try them when time permits)

Im just wondering since you said, indie game developers shouldnt create games alone. how would you recommend a lone game developer like myself finding other game developers to work with?

Another thing is, since youve said that ur a C/C++ guy, i assume your previous games was built using C/C++. Is there a good chance ud tell me what kinda engine you used(if any) and did you create design documents before you started? and have you played around with MMORPG mods?

Thank you Edykajang, ur an inspiration to Malaysian game developers :)

  3. Hi Edy,

I came across your profile in Linkedin and decided to contact you here. My company is currently looking for someone who would be able to assist us with designing and developing a simple flash game (something like Mario) for a client of ours. Would you be interested?

Feel free to email me at jill@gocomm.com.my if you’re interested and we can discuss further.

    Thanks!

    Regards,
    Jill Khoo
